This is the second of a series of books I am writing for a German publisher on the subject of SS Panzer Divisions in the Second World War. I write the manuscript in English, forward it on to them, they then translate it and publish it in German. It is an interesting concept because an English author is writing about a German war time unit, from an Allied perspective rather than a German one. Despite writing the book in an unbiased but factual manner, it is bound to cause a degree of disagreement. By way of example, most Germans would view all SS units as having been brave and heroic fighters, doing their best for their country, which to a degree, wouldn’t be argued. But, and it is a big but, people from what were the Allied nations of the Second World War, also read about the numerous atrocities and murders carried out by the men of the “Das Reich” division, something which isn’t so widely reported and looked at from a German perspective. Ultimately history is what it is, regardless of how distasteful that might be for some to read about.
